How much to rent an RV? ( Day, week and monthly rates )

class a rv

We love all forms of camping and RV camping is one of our favorite ways to go. RV camping is considered a form of glamping and I can tell you that my wife and kids prefer RV camping more than any other.

With that said we do not go RVing more than a few times a year and have found that renting one whenever we need it is the right choice for us rather than taking on the payments for an RV that we would use only a couple of times a year.

So how much is it to rent an RV for a day, week or month? The prices range on average around $100 per day up to $300 per day depending on the type of RV you want to rent. Of course, motorized Rv’s are usually more expensive than pull along. Also, you will get discounts for weekly and monthly rentals.

We have done all the research for you using RVshare.com. These prices were researched using our zip code here in Oklahoma. Prices may vary slightly in your state, but overall this will give you an accurate range of rates. You can get your exact rates from RV share by clicking here.

Here’s what we will cover

It’s important to note that all the average prices given are per day prices and while most will include the price of insurance, there are some that do not. It is also important to note that prices and availability are constantly changing and it is best to check the prices regularly. You can check the current prices here.

Do you need a CDL for class A or B motorhomes?

The answer to this depends on the state that you are in. Most states do not require a CDL for motorhomes, but there are some cases where a special non-commercial License may be required. We found this site has the exact information for each state. http://changingears.com/rv-sec-state-rv-license.shtml

Be sure you check to make sure that you are legal to drive in your state.

How much does it cost to rent a class A Motorhome?

Class A motorhomes are the largest driveable motorhomes and usually include all the convince of a small apartment. These will consist of a bathroom, a separate bedroom and living area, and a kitchen area. In the living area, the furniture will collapse down to make more beds for more people.

What we found is that Class A RV’s manufactured in the late 90’s and early 2000’s rental rates run from $129 to $250. The average was about $150.

Models that were a little newer or even a little fancier if you will rent between $180 to $350 with the average being in the $225 range.

The RV’s on in the $225 range often had the expandable living area and would be more suitable for a larger family.

We will point out that there were brand new motorhomes for rent that ran in the $600 plus range. If you are looking to rent a brand new RV, it will cost a lot more than one that is used.

Rental for this unit is $130.00 per day, $600.00 per Week or $1500.00 per month. There is a 2 nights minimum.

This one is one the lower end and by the pictures it looks like it has been well used. This does not mean it is tore up or anything but it would be perfect for someone that doesn’t have issues with pets, smoking or a pretty well used area.

Medium range $185 per night class A RV example-

For an extra $55 per night this one is a huge improvement. In the pictures, everything looks clean and well kept. The countertops are faux granite.

High range $350 per night class A RV example-

2018 Holiday Rambler Vacationer XE 36F

  • Class A Motor Home
  • Sleeps 10
  • Length 38 ft.
  • Transmission: Automatic
  • Cruise Control: Yes
  • Power Steering: Yes
  • Engine: Ford Triton V10
  • Fuel Consumption: 6 miles per gallon

Amenities- Electric generator, range (stove), cd player, fire extinguisher, refrigerator, kitchen sink, rear vision camera, roff air conditioning, shower, ipod docking station, navigation, T.V’s, toilet, seat belts, microwave, bathroom sink, slide out, in dash air conditioning, DVD player, AM/FM radio, hot and cold water supply.

Rental for this unit is $350.00 per day, $2,200 per Week or $5,000 per month. There is a three nights minimum.

  • 150 miles per night included with rental
  • Unlimited generator usage included with rental for free.
  • Tax: 8.25%
  • Refundable damage deposit: $2,000.00
  • Excess mileage: $0.35/mile
  • Cleaning Fee: $250.00
  • Insurance: $39.95/day (sales tax not included)

This one is top of the line, new and as nice as can be. The downside is all the extra costs that are incurred on top of the $350 per night rate and if you go over the daily limits then the cost will really explode.

There is an excess milage fee of .35 per mile, a cleaning fee (usually only charged if you leave it dirty) and insurance is not included in the rental price.

This is a perfect example of why you need to scroll all the way down in the Rv rental details and read everything. Most RV’s do not have these extra fees or limits but if you want to rent an almost brand new top of the line RV, you can expect this sort of thing.

How much does it cost to rent a class C RV?

Class C RV’s usually offer the same amenities as the class A but with much less room. You can still get 4 or 5 people pretty comfortably, but it might be a bit crowded. The upside is you will not need as big of a lot to park, and you will get a little better gas mileage for the most part.

The prices on these seem to range according to size and age as well. The prices overall ranged from $100 per day to $340. The average price was about $150.

The models that were older will run on average about $150 per day.

The newer models, as well as some of the bigger models, will run between $175 to $300 per night. The average was about $225.

The most expensive class C was $340 per day, but we found plenty of equivalent models that were renting for $150 to $180 per day.

  • Excess mileage: $0.40/mile

  • Insurance: $24.95/day (sales tax not included)

This rv rental looks pretty good for $155 per day. You will not get top of the line quality but if it’s simply trip it would be perfect. As you can see this one does not include the insurance in the price of the rental and has mileage and generator limits.

Rental for this unit is $175.00 per day, $1,103.00 per Week or $4,463.00 per month. There is a 1-night minimum.

  • 100 miles per night included with rental
  • Four hours per night generator usage included with rental for free.
  • Refundable damage deposit: $500.00
  • Excess mileage: $0.40/mile
  • Excess generator usage: $3.00/hour
  • toll pass: $40.00
  • Insurance: $24.95/day (sales tax not included)

Optional fees

  • RV cleaning: $125.00
  • Gray/Black water dumping: $25.00
  • vehicle storage: $20.00/night
  • Early/Late/Sunday pick up drop off: $50.00

For $20 more per night than the low range example, this would be a pretty good deal. Also, there are several services that they will do for you for a small extra fee. This includes cleaning and grey water disposal.

Again, insurance is not included in the rental price and there both mileage and generator usage limits. Be sure that you always take these extra fees into account.

Amenities- Shower, range (stove), microwave, seat belts, slide out, navigation, rear vision camera, DVD player, Cd player, AM/FM radio, in-dash air conditioning, roof air conditioning, refrigerator, kitchen sink, hot and cold water supply, toilet, bathroom sink, T.V., fire extinguisher, electric generator.

Rental for this unit is $244.00 per day, $1,537.00 per Week or $6,222.00 per month. There is a 2-night minimum.

  • 100 miles per night included with rental
  • Two hours per night generator usage included with rental for free.
  • Tax: 7.75%
  • Refundable damage deposit: $500.00
  • Excess mileage: $0.35/mile
  • Excess generator usage: $10.00/hour
  • Insurance: $34.95/day (sales tax not included)

Optional services

  • Dumping Fee: $50.00
  • Fuel Fee: $80.00
  • Cleaning Fee: $100.00
  • Smoking/Pet Fee: $500.00
  • Late Pick up/Drop Off Fee: $50.00
  • Lost Key or Key Fob: $700.00

This RV is very nice but the limits on miles and generator time are lower than most others. Also, the insurance is not included in the rental fee.

Going over on these limits could add up and if you do not clean up, dump the grey water, or a few other things you may get hit hard with additional fees.

How much does it cost to rent a class B Camper Van?

If you need something that has much better gas mileage and not as much room, this may be the answer for you.

The downside is you lose a ton of room and accommodations. Most of these vans have a sleeping area and some kind of small kitchen area. Most do not have a restroom area, but there are a couple of exceptions.

Prices were pretty wide-ranging here as well going from $97 per day up to $300. The average was in the $180 to $190 range.

The prices do not seem to have anything to do with age or size on these. We found some that were pretty nice down in the $150 to $170 per day range. For that matter, some of these were just as good as the ones running $300 per day.

I wouldn’t recommend one of these for more than two people. For the most part, there isn’t much room, and the kitchens are very small.

They would, however, be great for a couple traveling and camping across the country or some other similar situation.

Another great perk to this one is you get it with many things stocked like cups and plates. It also comes with clean sheets and blankets. The reviews were very high on the owners.

How much does it cost to rent a travel trailer?

If you have any kind of vehicle, then a travel trailer will give you the most bang for your buck. These trailers range in size and features, but most will have most of the creature comforts of home.

There are many advantages of travel trailers including better gas mileage and the ability to leave it on site and still have a vehicle to get around in.

The price range was pretty wide going with a 2011 Sunnybrook trailer for $60 per day to a 2017 Jayco going at $270 per day. The median price per day came it at around $125 per day.

Just about all the different sizes and options could be found at the $125 per day price range.

We would suggest that you know the towing limits of your vehicle and then find the one that has what you want. It looks like for $125 to $135 per day you will be able to find what you need.

How much does it cost to rent a toy hauler camping trailer?

Have some four-wheelers or dirt bikes you want to take camping? Then a toy hauler is an answer for you.

With a lot less selection than the other models, we were surprised to find that these trailers were very well priced per day. Most toy haulers have all the same options as a regular camping trailer but with room for your toys. Most include one or two bedrooms, a living area, bathroom, and kitchen.

We were surprised that toy hauler trailers only range from $69 per day to $150 per day. The average price was about $130 for a medium sized trailer and only about $150 for the large-sized trailers.

We highly recommend these if you want to take an ATV, motorcycle or even bicycles camping. The prices were much lower than we anticipated.

If you don’t mind something a little older then the prices are great one this rental. For a small fee they even give you options for bed sheets and towels, grey water dumping and more.

How much does it cost to rent a pop-up trailer?

If you want to take a small vehicle that doesn’t have a large tow capacity, then a pop-up trailer is for you. While the space may be a lot more limited than a traditional camping trailer but you can get all the same basic amenities.

These usually come with two sleeping areas as well as a living area that usually have some sort of small kitchen built in. As far as restrooms or showers go, pop-ups will sometime include one or both, but some do not have either.

The average rental prices on a pop-up trailer are very reasonable ranging from $45 per day to $100 per day.

The prices and options vary widely so be sure to check each listing to make sure you get everything you want.

This is a nice trailer, but for the money, I would go in the medium range as this one has a shower but no toilet. Again there are different options, pricing, and availability all the time.

What to look for in your rental.

When looking at a rental online be sure always to read all the options for each camper you are looking at.

Be sure to compare prices and amenities as you can usually find what you want for a great price.

Be sure to check all the photos on a listing. This will give you a great idea of the size and condition of items like your cooking area, restroom, shower, etc.

I can tell you without a doubt that most expensive rentals are not always the newest model nor does it mean they have more options. Again be sure to compare listings.

All the examples were looked up at the time of this article being written. Prices and availability can change, so please be sure to check the current rates t RVshare.
